The Complete Touch Typing Guide for Beginners

10 minute read

Touch typing means typing without looking at the keyboard, using muscle memory to know exactly where every key is. It's the single biggest lever for typing speed — once your fingers know the keyboard, your speed is limited by how fast you think, not how fast you can hunt for letters.

Step 1: Learn the home row

Rest your left hand on A S D F and your right hand on J K L ;, with both thumbs resting on the space bar. Most keyboards have small raised bumps on the F and J keys — you should be able to find the home row by feel alone, without looking down.

Step 2: Learn which finger owns which key

Open the typing test and use the Finger Guide in the top navigation — it colour-codes every key by finger so you can check yourself as you go.

Step 3: Practice with accuracy first, speed second

This is the part most beginners get backwards. Typing fast with your eyes on the keyboard and correcting mistakes as you go feels productive but actually caps your long-term speed, because you never build real muscle memory. Instead:

  1. Start on Beginner passages in Practice mode (no timer pressure).
  2. Keep your eyes on the screen, not your hands. If you lose your place, glance down briefly and return immediately.
  3. Aim for 95%+ accuracy before worrying about speed at all.
  4. Only move to Test mode once accuracy feels automatic.

Step 4: A simple 4-week plan

Week 1

10 minutes/day, Beginner passages, Practice mode. Goal: stop looking at the keyboard.

Week 2

15 minutes/day, Beginner → Expert. Goal: 95%+ accuracy consistently.

Week 3

Switch to Test mode, 5-minute runs. Goal: a comfortable, repeatable WPM.

Week 4

Try the Daily Challenge and a Ghost Race against your Week 3 best.
